Klimastudie Bad Liebenwerda

The city of Bad Liebenwerda serves as a model area for the research program “Experimenteller Wohnungs- und Städtebau“ (ExWoSt; experimental residential building and urban planning) by the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development. The program aims at a sustainable urban development with regard to climate change and at adapting the urban structure by means of preventive planning.

The study on local impacts illustrates how climate change will affect the urban area of Bad Liebenwerda and which impacts it will cause for man and nature. Action priorities were concentrated on the thermal comfort and the flooding risks. Based on the impact analysis an action plan on adapting to climate change was issued. The landscape plan of Bad Liebenwerda was used as an implementation tool, with attached maps presenting possibilities of how the city can adapt to climate change. The concept includes specific measures such as re-opening canalized ditches, flood protection, planting of woods and “energy hedges” (alley cropping) as well as creating so-called cool spots to balance out the “cool spots” in the city during heat periods.
