New Station Quarter, Gransee

Client: Amt Gransee und Gemeinden
Cooperation: STADT LAND FLUSS
Activity: Urban design review process
Period: 2025-2026
Location: Gransee

For the New Station Quarter in Gransee, we propose a compact, walkable neighbourhood south of Straße des Friedens. Homes are placed within easy reach of the station and the historic centre, while a new public open space serves the whole town.

Our concept is “Gransee Scale – Transformation and Addition.” We take the courtyard logic from Gransee’s historic plot structures and combine it with today’s garden culture—from private gardens to the allotments by the railway. The result is a network of shared, low-traffic spaces. Here, landscape is not decoration: it is the masterplan’s organising structure.

The site is arranged in three development bands running north-west to south-east. Between them sits the central green spine: a “Garden for Gransee.” It links the entrance at “Zu den Binnenhufen” to the existing allotments, which are retained and woven into the plan. The park offers places to meet, safe walking and cycling routes, and everyday recreational space. Play and activity terraces line the paths. At the station forecourt, we propose a youth area with skate and parkour, directly connected to the quarter.

Housing is organised in small neighbourhood clusters. Mixed typologies support different households and life stages. A two-way loop road provides access, while parking is consolidated so that courtyards and routes remain calm and people-first. A future mobility hub / neighbourhood car park can be added in the final phase.

Open space also works as green infrastructure. Rainwater is managed on site through courtyard swales, biodiverse green roofs and cisterns. Excess water is guided via open channels into an infiltration corridor along the park. We are also exploring planted treatment systems for greywater. The central park becomes a cooling, climate-balancing space.

Biodiversity is strengthened through connected gardens, meadows, perennial planting and fruit-bearing trees and shrubs, supported by composting and closed nutrient cycles. Delivery is planned in four independent phases, supported by an on-site information box. For energy, we are assessing a link to the woodchip heating plant or geothermal potential, with a safeguarded location in the south-east.

Overall, the scheme combines clear urban structure, neighbourly courtyards and climate-resilient public realm – built for Gransee, today and tomorrow.
