The 2.5-form entry school at Fennpfuhl is located in Alfred-Jung-Straße, Berlin-Lichtenberg. Around 150 pupils currently attend the primary and lower secondary school with a special educational focus on learning. A four-storey school building and a two-storey gymnasium are located on the grounds of the Schule am Fennpfuhl. Both are typical buildings of the element construction method from the second half of the 20th century.
In order to further develop our initial design ideas, we organised two meetings with pupils at the start of the project. As a result, many good design variants were developed together. The best and technically realisable ideas from the pupils, teachers and parents were incorporated into our further planning.
Form and colour
The chosen polygonal design language of the surfaces deliberately breaks with the right-angled alignment of the buildings and the site. This loosens up the orthogonal spatial structure of the existing building and extends and optimises path connections. In contrast to the former, partly small-scale organisation of the schoolyard, a new spaciousness as well as a clarity of the now fully usable open spaces is created. Furthermore, some of the furniture, play equipment and surfaces (e.g. for sports) have a colourful finish in bright blue-green tones. There are a variety of play and sports facilities for the different age groups, as well as various individually designed retreats on the grounds. The outdoor area of the Schule am Fennpfuhl also offers several communicative seating areas for successful outdoor breaks and lessons.
The extensive tree population significantly characterises the schoolyard grounds and creates a pleasant atmosphere. The existing trees therefore form the basic framework for our design. In addition, new, organically shaped planting areas with attractive shrubs and robust perennials structure the open spaces. New fruit trees and berry bushes were also planted in the school garden area along the northern boundary of the site.
