The City of Munich is subject to high pressure to densify. The Freiraum München 2030 concept envisages, among other things, the development of so-called “Parkmeilen” (park miles) throughout the city to secure strong open space networks in the long term, which run from the densely built-up city centre to the rural periphery, the Munich green belt. The “Südpark-Warnberger Riedel” park mile is an open space network that runs for around six kilometres in the south of Munich and connects the city with the densely wooded surrounding countryside. It begins in the north with the Sendlinger Wald/Südpark, narrows in a heterogeneous section with parks, allotments and fallow land, among other things, before large-scale agricultural areas characterise the park mile in the south. An open space-related, informal framework plan was to be developed for the Südpark-Warnberger Riedel park mile, which would set out guiding principles and recommendations on how the green corridor could be secured and developed in the long term.

In three workshops with local residents, the special qualities of the Park mile that need to be preserved, but also the challenges, were worked out and the experiences of local residents were gathered. In addition, the relevant departments of the City of Munich and city politicians were involved in the intensive coordination process. The masterplan and a concept of measures were developed by comparing all the basic elements and, on the basis of a comprehensive analysis, proposing a variety of intervention options for successive implementation.

The focus of the concept development was on linking the park mile with the surrounding neighbourhoods, as well as a continuous path connection from north to south. In addition, perspectives for long-term preservation and qualification of the open and green spaces for, among other things, staying, recreation and experiencing nature, urban agriculture and urban gardening or the urban climate and biodiversity were to be developed.
