The Weihersberg, Stein

Client: Stadt Stein
Cooperation: UmbauStadt
Activity: Urban and landscape planning competition
Period: 2023
Dimension: 19 ha
Location: Stein (Bavaria)

The city of Stein near Nuremberg is planning to develop the new “The Weihersberg” neighbourhood on the south-western side of the city. In addition to a high proportion of housing, the 19-hectare site will also be home to local businesses and a neighbourhood centre with a hotel, an event hall, a mobility hub, several multi-storey car parks and numerous green and open spaces.
The Weihersberg not only gives the new neighbourhood its name, but also creates its identity. Furthermore, the hill forms the central intersection of the green, visual and path axes – the open, green centre of the district. Three neighbourhoods are structured around the central Weihersberg. These sub-neighbourhoods are each grouped around a neighbourhood square and are connected by the traffic-calmed “Weihersbergring”. The open building blocks of the sub-neighbourhoods are structured around a residential courtyard. To the north of the three residential neighbourhoods, the “Höllweg Boulevard” forms the entrance to the Weihersberg quarter from the city centre. This is where the functions relevant to the neighbourhood, such as commerce, restaurants, event venues, social infrastructure and mobility services, can be found.

Open space

Differentiated green and open spaces organise the new district. The central green Weihersberg is linked to the green fringe that surrounds the neighbourhood via structurally rich green corridors. This nature and retention park forms a spatial buffer to the main road in the west and the leisure pool in the north-east. In addition, this green belt not only offers a wide variety of areas for recreation and intergenerational exercise, but also integrates a multitude of existing and new habitats for different groups of animal species.
