The master plan is a result of a multi-stage cooperative process of work, discussion and coordination aiming to define goals and concepts. It includes central options for action and tasks for the State of Berlin as well as the involved boroughs, universities and stakeholders in the economy. Several analyses were required in order to master the complexity of the site. The key aspects included the examination of historical layers in the old core of the site and in the northern part of the area, the analysis of the old stock of trees and the assortment of the structural and functional demands on the university campus. In future the site is to be adequately included in the interplay of culture, science, technology and economy. By means of combining modernity and innovation, functionality and history, the open spaces shall present themselves as a contemporary visiting card of the university.
