The vision for StadtLandWirtschaft Feldmoching emerged from the Ideenwerkstatt Münchner Norden. Building on the guiding principles formulated in the first phase, the concept was further developed, refined and sharpened in a second stage, with particular attention to its spatial, functional and infrastructural interrelationships. Key themes included stronger integration of landscape, neighbourhoods and mobility, as well as the further specification of water management, climate resilience and agricultural use.
The Landscape Sets the Framework
The Feldmoching agricultural landscape forms the organising backbone of StadtLandWirtschaft. Its openness and expanse are defining qualities – as a productive cultural landscape, a habitat for rare animal and plant species, a fresh-air generation area and an important recreational space for the north of Munich. The landscape provides orientation, creates identity and remains a place of belonging.
In the further development of the initial concept, the landscape structure was elaborated in greater detail. The Feldmoching fields assume a central role in climate adaptation and water management. New polder, flood retention and evaporation areas reference historic landscape typologies such as the Feldmochinger Moos and reinterpret them as a future-oriented, resilient cultural landscape. At the same time, the openness and generosity of the landscape are preserved, particularly to protect disturbance-sensitive bird species.
The landscape remains the economic basis for agriculture and is simultaneously strengthened through new forms of management, stewardship services and regional value creation. In this way, it is not only conserved but actively further developed.
Transport as the Backbone
Transport infrastructure forms the backbone of StadtLandWirtschaft Feldmoching. Based on the outcomes of the Ideenwerkstatt, an integrated mobility concept was developed that coordinates pedestrian, cycling, public transport and motorised traffic and can be implemented in successive stages.
A central element is the expansion of public transport. The extension and interconnection of tram routes, together with the integration of existing and potential new S-Bahn stations, create the foundation for a low-car development of the new neighbourhoods while simultaneously improving accessibility for existing areas. Supplementary neighbourhood bus services and multimodal mobility hubs further strengthen sustainable transport modes.
A dense network of pedestrian and cycle paths links neighbourhoods, landscape areas and recreational destinations. Strategic cycle routes connect the north of Munich to the city-wide network, while local connections support everyday mobility. Targeted adjustments to the road network and the integration of the Hasenbergl tunnel solution allow additional traffic to be channelled efficiently, minimising impacts on existing residential areas.
The Neighbourhoods as the Heart
The neighbourhoods form the heart of StadtLandWirtschaft Feldmoching. Their character responds to specific landscape and urban contexts and has been further differentiated since the Ideenwerkstatt.
The Feldmoching Garden Courtyards stage a locally characteristic transition between village and open fields. The sequence of farmstead, garden, common land and fields preserves visual connections, fresh-air corridors and the openness of the landscape. Fine-grained building typologies and largely car-free neighbourhood spaces reinforce the village-like character.
Polderstadt Fasanerie responds to high groundwater levels through a designed polder landscape. Polders fulfil technical, ecological and spatial functions simultaneously and form a defining structure between existing development, new buildings and open landscape. New educational, service and community facilities are created along the main axes.
Parkstadt Feldmoching Nord capitalises on its location along higher-order infrastructure. A potential new S-Bahn stop and the routing of the tram through the green spine of Hochmuttinger Straße establish it as a key component of northern Munich. Higher densities and mixed uses are combined with generous green corridors.
Willkommensstadt Ludwigsfeld is conceived as the continued development of a historically evolved settlement. A new centre with social, educational and service facilities emerges around the new tram stop, embedded within a network of green corridors and neighbourhoods.
