Workshop Procedure Blankenburger Süden

In the course of the urban planning workshop procedure Blankenburger Süden, four planning teams were selected to develop a framework plan for the new residential and working location. The objectives are to create a quarter with 5,000 – 6,000 residential units including the necessary infrastructure and to provide an area of approx. 40 ha for commercial use.

During the work procedure, consisting of several stages, the interested public has several opportunities to follow the design status and to exchange ideas with the profesionals. The teams work on their designs from different perspectives. UmbauStadt, MLA+ and FJP approach the urban development assumiung growth into the outskirts. As a result of the workshop Blankenburger Süden the various proposals are presented to initiate a discussion on further planning options. One of the four selected and finalised design will lay foundation for the subsequent structural and use concept. CONCEPT

The design by UmbauStadt, MLA+ and FJP defines the contrasts of the adjacent settlement areas as an opportunity. The aim is not to homogenize the outskirts of the city, but rather to qualify the existing urban fragments and to structure today’s fragmented space with well-consideredly placed landscape/infrastructure urban poles and to supplement missing urban offers. Located between the Panketal and Malchower Auenlandschaft as well as Neu-Hohenschönhausen and Pankow city centre, the Blankenburg Süd offers the ideal conditions for a new neighbourhood.

The design follows the principles:

Contrast | Juxtaposing a compact, dense neighborhood in deliberate contrast to the characteristic small-scale detached houses, allotment garden structures

Spatial DNA | Detecting and developing traces of settlement history: town centres and relics from different eras

Added value | Adding versatile locations for the entire northeast region of Berlin: urban environment, meeting points, recreation destinations and new landscape qualities

Linking and integration | Creating connections – Integrating the adjacent neighbourhoods – assemble the new and existing structures

Junction | Establishing connections between landscape areas (Panketal and Malchower Auenlandschaft) and between urban poles on the outskirts (Neu-Hohenschönhausen and Pankow, Heinersdorf and Blankenburg)

Urbanity and Density | Thinking space efficiently – a prerequisite for saving space, resources and energy as well as for climate protection and urban added value

INTEGRATING THE LANDSCAPE

The new quarter creates green links between the previuosly less qualified landscape areas of the Panketal and Malchower Auenlandschaft and the town centres of Heinersdorf and Blankenburg. Existing green corridors and watercourses, old avenues and pathways will be developed. The new centre of the district is located at the intersection of the green connecting axes. The urban heart of the quarter opens up to the southeast towards the Malchow floodplain landscape and to “Blankenburger Freiheit”, the upgraded Mörderberg. These scenic references and links significantly define the local identity of the new district. In addition, existing biotope areas in the Heinersdorf industrial zone and the corridor of the Schmöckpfuhlgraben form green joints at the edge of the quarter and at the same time mark the interfaces to the surrounding urban and garden structures.
