The Ziekowkiez is a typical 1950s housing estate in Berlin-Reinickendorf. The housing company Vonovia is currently developing it into a forward-looking neighbourhood (German: “Kiez”). In addition to the construction of 500 to 600 new flats, the infrastructure and open spaces are also to be upgraded.
Building rights for the planned urban densification will be created by means of a development plan. The environmental report guarantees the environmentally sound implementation of the construction measures. In addition, steps for habitat-friendly design of the outdoor facilities will be incorporated into the planning. On the basis of the faunistic studies, an integrated outdoor facilities concept will be developed that combines design, functional and ecological aspects and at the same time contributes to an ecological balance in the neighbourhood.
In contrast to the classic event formats of public participation, the ecological concerns of the project had to be communicated to the interested public in new ways in the pandemic year 2020. As a result, Kristina Schönwälder (Rehwaldt Landschaftsarchitekten), Dr Melanie von Orlow (NABU) and Martin Janotta present the approach and the most important solution strategies for ecological open space development in a video on Vonovia’s YouTube channel.
Detailed information on one of the largest construction projects currently underway in Berlin and further offers to participate in the planning process can be found on Vonovia’s project page.
