On 25 October 2023, DIE Deutsche Immobilien Entwicklungs AG (DIEAG) celebrated the start of the BE-U | Behrens-Ufer project with a symbolic ground-breaking ceremony. The 300 invited guests included numerous project and planning partners, as well as the Governing Mayor Kai Wegner (CDU). However, a tree was planted at the ceremony instead of the usual foundation stone being laid. This tree will change its location during the construction phase until it grows to its full size at its final destination. The chosen edible rowan (Sorbus avicularia “Edulis”) – an all-rounder for biodiversity and climate change adaptation – represents the quarter’s vision. The 10-hectare former industrial site on the River Spree in Berlin-Oberschöneweide will be developed into a pioneering technology centre in the coming years. As one of the most sustainable and innovative commercial city districts in Europe, research, development and production will come together here with urban life, art and culture. Energy independence and the highest ecological standards are prioritised on the project’s agenda.
As a planning partner, FUGMANN JANOTTA PARTNER drew up the biodiversity concept for the quarter’s development. Furthermore, we are planning the sustainable open spaces of BE-U | Behrens-Ufer. A very exciting endeavour. We are delighted to be part of “one of the lighthouse projects of Berlin’s urban development” (Kai Wegner) in the coming years. Completion of the future location BE-U is planned for 2028.
