This year’s expert symposium, hosted by the State Advisory Board for School Construction in collaboration with the Berlin Chamber of Architects, focused on the theme “School Construction and Nature Conservation.”
Across four specialist presentations, exemplary projects were showcased that successfully reconciled the requirements of nature conservation with the objectives of the Berlin School Construction Offensive. The event also explored planning processes for school construction projects with regard to species protection and environmental conservation, while highlighting opportunities for sustainable and ecologically sensitive design of school grounds and open spaces.
Our Senior Partner Martin Janotta—who also chairs the Working Group on Landscape Planning within the bdla (Association of German Landscape Architects)—delivered one of the keynote presentations. His talk examined the role of landscape planning in the context of school construction projects, with a particular emphasis on environmental impact assessments, species protection considerations, and expert reports concerning ecological interventions.
Following the presentations, practitioners, planners, and public administrators engaged in a panel discussion, providing an interdisciplinary platform for exchange. Audience members were also invited to actively participate by posing questions and offering comments, further enriching the discourse.
