Grundschule am Wasserturm – Opening of the Sports Hall and Completion of the Outdoor Areas

With a cheerful programme of events, Grundschule am Wasserturm in Pankow-Heinersdorf celebrated the opening of its new sports hall. Afterwards, State Secretary Dr Torsten Kühne and District Councillor Pasternack officially handed over the symbolic key to the school management.

Alongside the new two-court sports hall, the school’s outdoor spaces are also being upgraded in phases to meet future needs. The first construction phase has now been completed, delivering key outdoor areas and pedestrian connections that noticeably improve everyday school life while supporting the further development of the site.

Our overall design for Grundschule am Wasserturm structures the outdoor space into clearly defined areas: a playground for Years 2–6 and a separate break-time area for Year 1. Areas for play, recreation and planting are connected by gently curving “play streets”. Robust, non-toxic and thorn-free planting has been deliberately designed to be accessible and experienced at close hand.

The scheme also creates green spaces for learning and spending time outdoors. These include a generous lawn with specimen trees and seating, forming a “green classroom”, as well as a school garden to the south of the sports hall.

As part of the planning team, we are delighted to see the new sports hall and the completed first phase of the external works providing a strong starting point for the continued development of Grundschule am Wasserturm.
