DIEAG is currently developing the innovative BE-U | Behrens-Ufer neighbourhood in Berlin-Oberschöneweide. Once completed, the area on the banks of the Spree, which was once not open to the public, is to become part of the freely accessible urban space. The issue of ‘perceived safety’ is a crucial part of the ongoing planning process — especially for the public open spaces. For us as landscape architects, many projects raise the fundamental question: how can open design and broad public accessibility as well as nature conservation concerns be successfully reconciled with the issue of safety? Our office partner Reinhard Busch spoke about this complex planning task at BE-U | Behrens-Ufer in an interview with the Berlin business magazine BERLINboxx.
The full German article “Offen und sicher” (“Open and safe”) can be found in the current print edition of BERLINboxx magazine entitled “Innere (Un)Sicherheit” (‘Inner (in)security’).
