As part of the Berlin Senate’s school construction offensive, the “Schuldrehscheibe an der Werneuchener Wiese” opened on 8 December 2023. The temporary school hub building at Volkspark Friedrichshain will serve as an alternative location for five schools in succession over the coming years. In each case, the entire school community will move into the temporary hub building while their old school building is being renovated. This will ensure uninterrupted school operations during the construction work. What makes the project remarkable is the pace at which it was realized. In less than two years after the release of funds in the Berlin House of Representatives at the end of 2021, the Schuldrehscheibe can already be used.
The school building is a sustainable modular timber construction with flexible floor plans and offers sufficient space for up to 800 pupils on four floors. Thanks to the partially variable floor plans, it is possible to respond to the different space requirements of the primary and secondary schools. The service life of the school hub is planned for 15 years. At the end of its useful life, the building can be dismantled and reused elsewhere.
In addition to the modular timber school hub building, a three-court sports building in lightweight construction and outdoor facilities with recreational and sports areas were realized. As part of the planning team, FUGMANN JANOTTA PARTNER is delighted with the rapid realization of this ambitious project. We will be even happier when the first fresh green plants appear on the school grounds next spring.
