LRP Salzwedel

Client: Altmarkkreis Salzwedel
Period: 2012-2015
Dimension: 2.290 km²

The landscape structure plan (LSP) represents the goals and strategies of nature conservation and landscape management for the ‘Altmarkkreis Salzwedel’ administrative district in northern Saxony-Anhalt. On the basis of both digital geo-data and on-site inspection, analysis is carried out of the current condition of protected soil, water, climate/air, species and biotopes, as well as of the visual landscape; this is then presented through thematic maps and textual descriptions. Alongside the unique qualities of nature and landscape, existing and anticipated damage is also be taken into account, e.g. through particular forms of land usage. A programme of measures and goals based on this analysis is then developed in order for the richness of the nature and landscape, as well as a sustainable usage of natural resources, to be preserved. Besides integrating such topical concerns as habitat connectivity, watercourse development, climate change and the use of renewable energies, the Salzwedel LSP is distinguished through its innovative site graphics, developed during a University of Kassel and TU Berlin ‘site drawing in landscape planning’ research project. During a mapping exercise practitioners became acquainted with the contents and potential applications.
