Lichterfelde-Süd: urban planning workshop completed

The winner of the urban planning workshop in Lichterfelde-Süd was announced on Friday 19 September. The Amsterdam-based Casanova + Hernandez architects convinced the jury of politicians, urban planners and investors with their third design, which was voted as the unanimous winner.

FUGMANN JANOTTA bdla saw the whole process through organizationally; the bureau advises the Steglitz-Zehlendorf Office of Environment on complex landscape planning questions and solutions to a range of technical nature conservation issues. The main focus here is the preservation and development of particularly valuable areas, for which a concept for landscape development was developed in parallel together with residents and experts during the ‘Green Centre’ workshop. Unsuitable for building, the aim is to permanently secure the area as coherent meadowland, potentially serving the needs of both nature conservation and local recreation.

After the many years of extensive grazing of horses that followed the end of its military use in the 90s, an area of landscape unprecedented in Berlin for its diversity and extraordinary richness has developed. Besides its unique significance for species protected in Federal and European law such as the green toad, moor frog, or large copper butterfly, the mosaic-like ensemble of forest and open land also boasts an attractive scenic landscape that is very unusual for the city. The next ‘Green Centre’ workshop takes place on 4 November 2014 in Steglitz City Hall.
